Country Corner

Time: Wednesday from 7-8:30 pm

What is “Cape Breton?” Cape Breton means many things to many people but to listeners of CFSI’s “Country Corner” it means the voice of Gord McKenna aka Docgord.

Gord started his radio work back in the 60s in Germany when he was in the RCAF. He first worked at a volunteer station, CFN-Zweibrucken. A member station of the Canadian Forces Radio Network in Europe. Gord at that time, pretty well did any type of show from Jazz to Country but never Classical. Eventually he stayed with country. While a member of CFN-Z he did many interviews with top country stars, Little Jimmy Dickens, Hank Thompson, Charlie Pride, Hank Snow, etc.

On his return to Canada in 1969 and based at CFB Comox, he worked for the local radio station on week-ends doing a request show.

Gord has worked for CFIS for a few months now and started off doing the midnight to six show, Monday to Friday to get his feet wet again before he was slotted for a country show on Wednesdays.

He has also taken up the guitar again and plays with the Old Time Fiddlers and really enjoys the music of where he was born, Cape Breton Island. He also enjoys playing with the young folks here in PG who are keeping the old time fiddling alive.
